Chapter TH13TEEN

Day of Sequence 2WO

The strong river current threw Richard into sharp rocks hidden below the water's surface. The rapids shot him out like a cannonball and spit him out at the mouth of the river onto a sandy shore. He gasped for air as he choked and spat up water. Richard slowly regained his footing on the bank as he heard a commotion off into the distance. He could not identify what or where the sound came from. It was dark outside, and the cold temperature now transitioned to steamy heat and stagnant moisture. The thin evergreen trees were replaced with thick redwoods with a reddish hue fibrous that painted the forest floor. A faint scream startled Richard as he glanced to his right and examined a tree. The giant redwood timber glared at him while it screamed again. Richard glanced to his left, where another tree gave him a maddening look. The petrified scream broke the calmness of the forest. Richard finally realized it was a man’s voice screaming in terror in the distance. He used the little strength he had left to lift himself up out of the sand. He planted his foot into the muddy surface and followed the horrified screams into the woods.

Richard approached a jungly watering hole. The vibrant green complimented the prehistoric vegetation that surrounded a frightened man. His silent creep helped him get closer to Clark as he tried not to be seen. Richard witnessed a man crawling out of the water in a soaked and dirty kimono. The petrified man stood up and awkwardly sprinted directly into a tree. Richard saw he needed help and ran to his aid. As he approached the terrified victim, he noticed the familiar face of his long-time apprentice, Clark Davis. Clark rolled around, flinching at nothing. His mind was ferociously attacking itself. Scream after scream till he finally halted due to the noise of an approaching engine. Richard hovered in the shadows taking advantage of the engine noise as he silently leapt just behind his struggling friend. Clark desperately tried to calm himself down. Richard slid behind Clark and quickly covered his mouth before he could scream. The two men fell to the ground as Richard yanked him under the wing of a large fern.

“Shhhhhhh.” He said quietly.

“Richard...? Is that… Is that you?” Clark whispered.

Richard heard the guard approaching.

“Why are you here, Clark? Have… have you seen Leddy?” Tears filled Richard's eyes at the thought of his beloved wife.

Clark shook his head with confusion. “Help me…” Clark whimpered. Clark's eyes were closed. He was so frightened he couldn’t look at the world. “Listen to me! This place is not what you think it is. They. Are. Always. Watching.” He whispered. “I’m sorry. I gotta find Leddy.”

Richard pushed Clark up, remaining hidden as Clark stumbled out from cover. Clark whimpered to himself and couldn’t formulate a sentence. “Freeze!” The guard screamed. Richard saw the light locate Clark instantly. Clark was shaking like a battered animal physically and psychologically abused.
